Searching for Poon
by Justin Hui

Searching for Poon traces the journey of the artist’s grandmother, who is struggling with memory loss. Hui uses her photographs and juxtaposes them with his own, searching and reconstructing her journey from mainland China to Hong Kong. The book mirrors the perspective of the artist in the present and his grandmother’s perspective fading back in time, interwoven with elements and motifs that echo on both ends.

A sheet of paper is scored and folded into a 12-page book, creating the possibility for hundreds of permutations and associations to be made. This nonlinear act of reading becomes an exploration of memory, akin to how one remembers and recalls the past. Photography, once a purveyor of objective reality, transforms into an exercise in imagining.
